Description from the seller

Art Nouveau hair comb – Egyptianizing decor – around 1900

Important hair comb from the Art Nouveau period, datable around 1900, featuring a decor typical of the Egyptianomania trend very popular at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.

The comb is made of a honey-brown translucent organic material mimicking tortoiseshell, widely used for women's hair accessories of the Belle Époque.

The upper part is adorned with an openwork mount in silvered metal, set with rhinestones, forming an elaborate decorative composition. The decoration depicts a stylized figure evoking an Egyptianizing profile, surrounded by floral motifs recalling lotus flowers, characteristic symbols of the iconography of ancient Egypt.

The piece testifies to the taste for Egyptian motifs in the decorative arts around 1900, a period during which this type of inspiration spread in jewelry and feminine accessories.

With its generous dimensions and the richness of its decoration, this comb makes a fine example of a Belle Époque hair accessory.
