Description from the seller
An antique carved oak drop-front desk, probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.
The piece is a secretaire desk, also commonly known as a desk, with a hinged slanted front that drops down to create a writing surface.
Material and finish: The desk is made of darkly finished oak, a common material for this style and period.
Woodcarving: The most striking feature is the intricate relief engravings on the panels of the two large drawers beneath the desk area, on the stiles (vertical supports) at the corners and along the lower edge. These flower- or scroll-like engravings are indicative of the Jacobean Revival style.
Legs: It sits on the characteristic turned legs, consistent with the Jacobean style.
Hardware: The drawers are fitted with round brass handles and keyhole escutcheons. The drop-front also has a central keyhole and brass hardware along the top edge.
Potential provenance/period: The heavy carving and the use of oak suggest an English or French provincial origin, likely produced during a revival of earlier styles (Jacobean or Louis XVI Country French) in the late 1800s to early 1900s.
Dimensions: h. 90 cm, w. 91 cm, d. 45 cm
In good condition with signs of wear.
