Description from the seller
Ravishing Cabinet Snuffbox in Moss Agate and Gilded Metal
Elegant small rectangular box, able to serve as a snuffbox or pillbox, featuring delicate marquetry work. It is composed of calcédonine plates (moss agate) finely polished, mounted in a gilded metal frame (probably vermeil, gilded bronze, or gilded brass).
• The Material: Moss agate is distinguished by its green deep dendritic inclusions, creating organic patterns reminiscent of woodland landscapes or moss. In the photographs taken with backlit translucence, one notices the superb quality of the stone, showing complex arborizations on a translucent background.
• The Mounting: Discreet hinge at the rear and a spherical push-button on the front face. Traces of small incisions inside the metal used for assembly. Indication of manual workmanship.
• The Pedestal: The box rests on four baluster feet finished with coordinated hard stone cabochons (agate), a rare and refined finish.
• Era: Probably 19th century (Neo-Classical or Biedermeier style).
• Condition: Good overall condition. A patina of wear on the metal is noted and there is a beautiful integrity of the stone plates (no cracks apparent in the photos).
