An antique walnut longcase clock case from Italy, Toscana region, circa 1900, with a missing movement.
Description from the seller
In this listing, an elegant pendulum clock case (longcase) from the Italian or Central European area, dating from the late 1800s. The piece is made of walnut, with a splendid flame grain on the lower part and on the base.
This case is perfect for a restoration project or to be converted into a high-quality Curio Cabinet, thanks to its clean lines and the wide glass section.
Analysis and Construction Details:
Cap: Temple-front hood with a refined dentilled frame typical of late 19th-century cabinetmaking.
Body: Single full-height door with original brass hinges. The glass is antique and shows the typical waviness and air bubbles of the period.
Base: Solid plinth decorated with an engraved acanthus leaf-style frame that visually separates the base from the upper body.
Back: In solid wood, features the original holes for mounting the mechanism bracket (previously removed).
Condition Report:
The piece is structurally sound and shows no active woodworm signs. However, as an antique item, it bears the marks of time:
Cap: A noticeable defect in the upper left corner (missing a portion of the frame, as documented in the photo).
Finish: The original polish is slightly faded in some spots; a refresh with shellac or wax would enhance the walnut’s warm color.
Mechanism: ABSENT. The case is sold with only the wooden case as a piece of furniture or restoration project.
Base: Shows small scratches and wear consistent with age at the bottom (kick rail).
Technical Specifications
Material: Walnut wood and fir (for the back).
Period: circa 1880-1900.
Conditions: To restore / Good with signs of use.
