Arabic Qur'an single illuminated folio from North India/Kashmir, dating to c.1825, written in black Naskh with red Persian commentary between each line, 19 cm by 12 cm, one page, in good condition, content from Al‑'raf (Quran 7:179–188).
Description from the seller
An attractive folio from a Qur'an written in N.India/Kashmir C1825. It consists of a single page of Qur'anic scripture in black naskh script with Persian commentary in red between each line offering additional context and guidance. An illuminated marginal site at the upper right, below which is further commentary in freehand.
The manuscript contains scripture from chapter 7 of the Quran, Al-'raf (The Heights), v.179-188, which focus on themes of spiritual negligence, the purpose of human faculties, the nature of Divine guidance and misguidance, and the limitations of the Prophet Muhammad's knowledge regarding the Unseen (Ghayb). These verses emphasize accountability, urging the use of intellect to recognise truth and warning against following desires. The key themes are: that humans are accountable for using their senses and intellect to recognise the truth; that pure faith is maintained by acknowledging that only Allah has knowledge of the unseen and controls all outcomes; that ignoring divine signs leads to being more misguided than animals; and that the Qur'an: is the final, decisive message to be followed.
