Sugimoto Portraits, a hardcover volume by Hiroshi Sugimoto comprising 96 pages, originally in English, published by Guggenheim Museum Publications and Harry N. Abrams, in a 30 × 24 cm format.
Description from the seller
Volume dedicated to the famous Portraits series by the Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto, one of the most important figures in contemporary photography.
In this series the artist photographs historical figures and iconic characters depicted in the famous wax statues of the Madame Tussauds museum. Through an extremely rigorous use of light and composition, Sugimoto transforms these figures into surprisingly realistic portraits, challenging the relationship between reality, representation, and historical memory.
The project reflects one of the central themes of Sugimoto's artistic research: time and the perception of photographic imagery. The photographs, produced with great technical precision and printed in black and white, evoke classic portraits from the history of art and photography.
The volume was published by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to the artist and represents one of the most significant catalogs devoted to this series.
