Description from the seller
For sale: Beautiful authentic antique bench with a tall backrest – a true primitive settle or hearth bench from the European countryside (possibly Dutch, Flemish, or Scandinavian). This is not a restored or polished piece, but a pure, untouched specimen full of character and history.
Features:
• Solid old wood with deep, natural patina, wear, cracks, wormholes, and signs of use – purely authentic and charming, wabi-sabi.
• High, straight plank back (ideal against drafts at the hearth or as an eye-catcher in modern interiors).
• Strong concave/curved seat for surprisingly good comfort despite the hard wood.
• Thick, handmade, lightly protruding legs – robust and stable.
• No screws or modern add-ons; everything is carpentered and joined in the traditional way.
This kind of bench used to stand in farmers’ kitchens, barns, or by the open hearth. Today it is a sought-after design piece in rustic, industrial, or ethnographic interiors – perfect as a statement piece in the living room, hallway, entry, or even as a unique garden decoration (indoor/outdoor use possible, but keep dry).
Condition: Good for its age – and especially... sturdy, no loose parts, but with the typical imperfections of centuries of use (see photos). No restoration needed; the patina makes it uniquely valuable.
