A volume from the heyday of this famous French satirical magazine.
It concerns the year 1901, issue no. 357, 7th year from September 7 through to no. 408, 8th year 1902, with beautiful title pages, countless text illustrations, appendices and various advertisements. It provides a good snapshot of the political, cultural and artistic life in France at the beginning of the 20th century.
This part looks good.
Le Rire (1894 – 1971) was the most successful of all satirical French magazines at the beginning of the 20th century. The publication was filled with splendid drawings by famous artists such as Steinlen, Toulouse-Lautrec, Goursat, Willette, Forain, Capiello, Hermann-Paul and Guillaume.
Le Rire was in dance halls, cabarets and cafes to convey the atmosphere for its readers, including illustrations of contemporary stars such as Yvette Guilbert, Polaire, Jane Avril and Réjane.
The magazine contained chromotypographies on the front, back and center pages. Many of these illustrations are currently sought-after collectibles.
