Description from the seller
Giant Triton Charonia tritonis
Collectible shell
The giant Triton Charonia tritonis, also known as the Triton conch or Neptune’s trumpet, is a large prosobranch gastropod mollusk with a long spiraled shell.
This shell is depicted on the lips of the sea gods to whom it served as a horn and is used as such by seafaring peoples.
The Triton conch is described in popular reference works as the most striking and best known of marine gastropods.
The Giant Triton is widespread, though rare, throughout the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea.
Like all mollusks, tritons possess a muscular ventral foot, often ciliated, which plays a role in locomotion.
They have a mantle that envelops the dorsal visceral mass and secretes the shell, mainly composed of calcium carbonate.
The shell of most individuals is dextral, meaning its coil runs clockwise when viewed from the apex.
Adults can reach an exceptional size of 50 cm.
Superb conch, large shell in excellent condition, a must-have in the collection of any conchologist or cabinet of curiosities!
Dimensions:
Length 23 cm
Width 11 cm
Height 10 cm
Weight: 500 grams
