Decorative vintage advertising poster for Pope lamps, designed by Eppo Doeve. The poster shows a striking illustration of a light bulb from which a colorful bouquet of flowers grows, with a label bearing the Pope brand. The combination of technology and nature symbolises the light and liveliness of electric lighting.
The design has a clear mid-century graphic look with strong colors against a dark background, making the image stand out. In the lower right corner is the monogram “ED”, referring to designer Eppo Doeve.
Eppo Doeve (1907–1981) was a well-known Dutch illustrator, draftsman and graphic designer. He created illustrations, posters and political cartoons and worked for newspapers and magazines such as Elsevier and Het Parool. His work is known for its refined illustration style and clear compositions.
The Pope brand was one of the earliest producers of light bulbs in the Netherlands. The company was founded in 1889 in Venlo by British engineer Frederic R. Pope and later became part of Philips.
This poster forms a beautiful piece of Dutch industrial and graphic advertising history.
