Nephrite is a mixed crystal from the continuous solid solution series of the minerals tremolite and actinolite. It is not recognized as a distinct mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA).
When nephrite occurs as a mass of interwoven microcrystalline fibers, it is called jade. This material, also referred to as nephrite jade, is processed into desirable jewelry stones and decorative items, but is chemically quite distinct from jadeite, which is the main component of jade. The colors of nephrite are caused by chromium and iron and range from gray-green through dark green to almost black; the color can also shift to reddish-brown.
The name nephrite comes from the Greek nephros (νεφρός) meaning kidney. An old popular belief attributed healing and strengthening properties to the stone, especially for kidneys, urinary tract, and bladder. Esoteric practitioners also claim it to be a healing stone for vision, creativity, etc., as well as a protective stone, though these claims have not been scientifically proven.
Stone axes made from nephrite were highly valued tools in Europe during the Neolithic period due to their rarity.
Shipping as insured registered mail.
