Description from the seller
Art Nouveau belt buckle – gilded brass and turquoise cabochons – ca. 1900
Elegant belt buckle from the Art Nouveau era, made around 1900, in a style close to English Arts & Crafts production.
The mount is in molded gilded brass, decorated with supple, undulating lines typical of Art Nouveau, evoking vegetal forms and the famous whip-like motif characteristic of this period.
It is adorned with oval turquoise blue glass paste cabochons, providing a bright contrast with the gilding. These imitation stones were highly appreciated in Belle Époque fashion accessories.
The frame is openwork, with a central steel rod, allowing to fix a belt or a textile ribbon on the back, as was done for women’s belts at the turn of the 20th century.
