Description from the seller
A catalog published in conjunction with the retrospective “Rule Without Exception”, which toured several venues in the United States in 1991-1992. The publication reexamines Lewis Baltz’s early works from the 1960s and 1970s, presenting a systematic account of his methodology through both images and critical texts.
Baltz’s photographs—depicting suburban industrial zones and newly developed landscapes with repetitive, objective precision—are interpreted not as subjective expressions but as a “rule-based visual protocol.” In this sense, the book functions less as a conventional photobook than as a research-oriented document. Situating Baltz’s practice within the contexts of Minimalism and Conceptual Art, it clarifies how Baltz transformed photography from a medium of emotion into one structured by formal systems.
Edited by the artist, poet, and art critic Bernard Lamarche-Vadel. Signed by Lewis Baltz.
