Sumerian stone head amulet from circa 3200–2900 BC, measuring about 1.7 cm long and 1 cm wide, in good original condition with provenance from Ex SM collection London and private collections.
Description from the seller
A Sumerian stone head with finely carved almond-shaped eyes, straight nose and mouth. The head may have been pierced vertically through the centre, with a perforation still visible at the top of the head. The reverse is unadorned, with a long chip near the centre. The stone presents with a grey colouring. Earthly encrustations and signs of wear as consistent with age to the surface, such as chipping, scratches, and cracks.
Late Uruk/Jemdet Nasr Period. Such amulets have also been described as depicting a demon, thus they were most likely apotropaic.
Measurements: (circa) L 1.7cm x W 1cm
Provenance: Ex SM collection London, acquired 1970s-2000s.
