Description from the seller
This is a splendid solid silver Victorian small box, known as a "pill box" or "snuff box" (tobacco box), produced in England.
Reading the symbols from left to right in the photo of the bottom:
• C.G & Co: It is the maker's mark, Charles Green & Co, a renowned Birmingham silversmith firm specializing in small luxury items and jewelry.
• Profile of Queen (Assay Mark): It is the head of Queen Victoria. This mark (called the "Duty Mark") indicates that the tax had been paid to the State and restricts dating to before 1890.
• Anchor: It is the symbol of the Birmingham Assay Office, the main center for the processing of this type of English silver.
• Walking Lion: It is the most important mark. It guarantees that the object is in Sterling Silver (925/1000), the British purity standard.
• The letter "u" (lowercase): It is the year letter. In combination with the shield and the other marks, it identifies the exact year of production: 1870.
It is a classic example of Victorian style, characterized by rich repoussé decorations with floral motifs and scrolls.
• The Central Cartouche: On the lid there is a smooth rectangular space (cartouche). At the time it was left blank to allow the buyer to have their initials or a date engraved.
