Description from the seller
This cabinet is a beautiful example of Breton woodcarving, originating from the Brittany region, France. It appears to be a miniature version of a traditional Breton piece of furniture, which may mean it is a puppet cabinet, a spice cabinet, or a decorative cabinet.
Features of the cabinet:
Material: Probably walnut wood, a popular wood species for fine carving.
Woodcarving:
Doors with round, openwork ornaments, possibly inspired by sun wheels or traditional Breton symbolism. Two doors with hinges, two sliding doors.
Small turned spindles on top, typical for Breton furniture.
Geometric and floral patterns along the edges and sides.
Use:
Because of the ventilation openings in the doors, it is quite possible that it was a spice cabinet used to store spices or tea.
It could also be a puppet cabinet, a miniature version of larger Breton cupboards, often made as luxury toys or demonstration pieces.
Dating: This type of cabinet was widely made in the 19th and early 20th centuries as part of Breton folk art.
Dimensions:
Height: 45 cm
Width: 37 cm
Depth: 16 cm
