Victorian Malacca Walking Cane with Sterling Silver Figural Handle – London 1896

Elegant Victorian gentleman’s walking cane featuring a striking sterling silver figural handle modelled as a multi-faced bearded head, reminiscent of the classical Janus motif. Sculptural handles of this type were popular in the late nineteenth century and are particularly sought after by collectors of antique walking sticks.

The silver mount is fully hallmarked for London 1896, showing the lion passant indicating sterling silver together with the London assay mark and the date letter for 1896. The maker’s mark appears to read A.S.

The silver collar is engraved “A.G. Jenkins 1896”, suggesting personal ownership or presentation during the late Victorian period and adding historical character to the piece.

The shaft is made from malacca cane, a highly valued material for quality walking sticks due to its strength, flexibility and attractive natural grain. The cane measures approximately 86 cm in length and is fitted with a later rubber ferrule.

The walking stick remains in good antique condition with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The silver handle retains strong sculptural detail and a pleasing antique patina, while the malacca shaft shows light wear typical of a piece of this age.
