Description from the seller

Large sugar shaker produced in Austria by Berndorf Krupp at the beginning of the 20th century.

The sugar shaker is made of alpacca and is in good overall condition. Minor defects shown in the photograph.

Berndorf was founded in 1843 by industrialists Alfred Krupp and Alexander Schoeller in the small village of Berndorf, located in the Lower Austria (Niederösterreich) region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (it still exists today under the name Besteck Berndorf & Tafelgerte: the name of this new company was given after World War II). Initially specialized in solid silverware, they soon began producing cutlery with new robust materials. Alpacca, a particularly hard alloy of copper, nickel and zinc that lends itself easily to planishing, and the development of the rolling mill for the production of spoons for the first time facilitated the mass production of high-quality cutlery. Thanks to their moderate selling prices, the products quickly found a ready market, even beyond the borders of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Even today Berndorf products feature an engraved bear as a mark of quality.

After a particular set of military tableware had found great favor at the imperial court, in 1897 Berndorf was ennobled with the title of supplier to the court. This proved to be the launching pad that made Berndorf products unquestioned megasellers. The hotel and restaurant business throughout the Austro-Hungarian monarchy supplied their establishments with Berndorf cutlery and tableware. International shipping and railway lines also made use of the sturdy tableware from Lower Austria.

Later, around 1925, Arthur Krupp Berndorf Austria and Wellner Sohne Germany opened branches in Milan and Florence: hence why sometimes we find marks with the standing bear looking downwards with the Milano inscription or we find the bear in passing logo.

Seller's Story

My name is Riccardo, I recently graduated in Art History from the University of Florence and I am passionate about porcelain. From tableware to artist vases, from figurines to tea and coffee sets, I am fascinated by the mastery and the ability of great artisans and designers who shape this so fragile material, turning a raw mass into masterpieces with a story to tell. During my years at university I became interested in the history of 19th- and 20th-century tableware art; today, every day, I work with prestigious porcelain pieces that always have something to say to me and to those who purchase them. Of my work I love that I can discover more about the objects I find as I travel around Italy, always learning something new. I always strive to convey to my clients this passion I have for the objects I sell, certain that each one of them has a story to tell: the story of who created it, the story of who preserved it, and the story of who will give it a new life.
