According to legend, the Bozo, a fishing people of Mali, are descendants of Faaro, the water spirit and creator of the world. The unveiling of Bozo masks and puppets celebrates this origin myth, their relationship to terrestrial and aquatic animals. Accompanied by singing and drums, the dance of masked individuals alternates with that of the sogow, large masks representing animals—sometimes mythical, sometimes real. Contemporary fish.
