Masque, a wooden Igbo reproduction from Nigeria, dating to the late 20th century, measuring 30 cm high by 17 cm wide, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
The Igbo (or Ibo) are one of the three major ethnic groups of Nigeria, comprising about eighteen percent of the population. They are mainly located in the southeastern part of the country (bounded to the north by the Benue and to the west by the Niger River), but they also form a significant portion of the population of the country’s two largest cities: Lagos in the west and Kano in the north. Their languages are Igbo and its various dialects.
One of the main characteristics of Igbo masks is that they are painted white, the color of the spirit (Mmwo). One of the most well-known masks among the spirit masks is the famous Agbogho (woman) Mmuo or Mmwo (spirit), which allows the Igbo to conceptualize the idea they have of the ideal young woman. The mask is worn by a man and is danced during harvest or planting festivals, as well as at funerals of important people.
