Kizan (起山) – Ryū (龍)Series - Working tool (7) - Woodcarving Chisel Set

A complete 7-piece Japanese woodcarving chisel set from the Ryū (龍 / "Dragon") series, signed Kizan (起山), presented in its original maker-signed paulownia wood box. The box lid is brush-inscribed Ippin (逸品) Kizan / Fujiwara Hidekazu saku (藤原秀和作) with a red inkan seal.
Each tool features a tomoé (共柄) all-steel construction — blade and handle forged from a single piece — with a densely hammered texture along the grip. The bright, polished blade faces contrast with the dark, textured handles, and the vivid vermilion-red felt lining of the box creates a striking presentation.
The profile sheet, affixed to the inside of the box lid, is headed Ryū (龍) Mokuchō Chōkoku Tomoé Nanahon-gumi (木彫彫刻 共柄七本組) and identifies seven traditional carving profiles:

No. 1 – Maru-gata (丸型, gouge, uchihagane/inner steel) 9 mm: deep carving, straight-line drilling
No. 2 – Hira-gata (平型, flat chisel) 12 mm: surface carving
No. 3 – Isuka-gata (イスカ型, skew chisel) 9 mm: line incising, notching
No. 4 – Nama-zori (生反, spear-point / reverse-curve) 12 mm: double-sided scooping
No. 5 – Sankaku magari-gata (三角曲り型, bent triangular) 8 mm: line carving, corner work
No. 6 – Maru magari-gata (丸曲り型, bent gouge, uchihagane) 12 mm: round carving, scooping
No. 7 – Hira magari-gata (平曲り型, bent flat chisel) 9 mm: flat scooping

The profile sheet also notes that custom sizes and profiles were available to order, and that 10-piece and 15-piece sets were also produced.
Condition: The steel on most blades is clean with no visible rust. One blade has a minor chip at the cutting edge (see photos). The original plastic sleeves are still present. The paulownia box shows age-related wear including surface scuffs and toning; the foam and felt interior show discolouration and some compression from age. The profile sheet shows creasing and minor tears.
