Beautiful large oval tray made of painted metal (toleware) with a romantic Dutch scene. The tray shows a typical Dutch landscape with a windmill by the water, figures in historical clothing, boats in the canal, and a dog in the foreground. The edge is richly decorated with gold-colored ornaments and foliate motifs.
This type of tray was produced around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century and was intended as a decorative serving tray or tea tray. The painting has a charming craquelure (age cracks in the varnish) that suits the age of the object.
The back is black-lacquered with no visible mark.
