Two-item set comprising a Victorian silk top hat with a leather sweatband, dating to circa 1890–1910 and made in the United Kingdom by an 'Other brand', size one, in good used condition, presented with the original Cresta hat box.
Description from the seller
Original antique gentleman’s top hat, an elegant example of traditional British formal headwear dating to the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1910.
Crafted in classic black silk plush with a tall, well-proportioned crown and gently curved brim, the hat reflects the refined style associated with formal evening dress and ceremonial occasions of the Edwardian period. The silk surface retains its characteristic sheen and texture, while the overall structure remains attractively preserved, displaying the timeless silhouette of the traditional gentleman’s top hat.
The interior is lined in light silk and fitted with a leather sweatband. The lining bears the maker’s crest and stamp of T. H. I. – Established 1778 – J. Ho. Townend & Co., London, a respected British hatter and outfitter known for quality gentleman’s hats supplied to the London market. The interior also features the original decorative silk bow with tassels, a typical detail of period hat construction.
Presented together with the original round hat box marked “CRESTA”, a rigid cardboard storage box with fitted lid used for protecting and transporting formal hats. The box forms a desirable accompanying piece and enhances the authenticity and display appeal of the set.
Condition consistent with age and careful use. The silk plush shows areas of wear and thinning typical for antique top hats of this type, with small losses to the nap visible in places. The interior lining shows minor age-related marks. The hat box displays surface wear, small splits to the rim and general patina commensurate with age.
A genuine antique example over a century old, offering both historical character and decorative appeal. Ideal for collectors of antique fashion, theatrical costume, period display, or enthusiasts of traditional British gentleman’s accessories.
