Description from the seller
The Pfemba statues of the Bakongo: Fertility and maternal power
The Pfemba, emblematic female statues of the Bakongo, celebrate motherhood as the foundation of social and spiritual life. Depicting a woman seated or standing, carrying a child on the back or at the hips, these sculptures embody the ideal of fertility, protection, and the transmission of lineages. Their hieratic posture and attributes (scarifications, elaborate hairstyles) emphasize the sacred status of the mother, mediator between the ancestors and future generations.
Unlike the Nkishi, the Pfemba are not objects "charged" with magical substances, but symbols of blessing. Placed in homes or family altars, they remind us of the central role of women in the perpetuation of the community. Their aesthetic, at once realistic and stylized, reflects a cosmology in which procreation is both a natural and divine act.
