Masque Muminia from the Lega culture in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a 32 cm high, 1 cm deep and 1 cm wide original piece from the Milieu du XXe siècle, provenance: private collection.
Description from the seller
Ancient Colonial Collection
Within the Bwami initiatory society of the Lega, the Muminia masks embody a high degree of knowledge and spiritual power. Unlike figurative objects, these masks, often abstract and geometric, are reserved for initiates of the higher grades. Their stylized form, stripped of realistic features, symbolizes access to hidden truths, attainable only after years of learning.
Used during secret ceremonies, the Muminia are not worn but displayed as symbols of wisdom. Their presence reminds us that knowledge, in Lega culture, is a progressive quest toward moral and social balance. These masks, in their very austerity, reveal an aesthetics of the essential, where spirituality takes precedence over appearance.
They thus illustrate an initiatory philosophy in which art serves as a bridge between the visible and the invisible.
