These nuggets come from the desert region of Tiris Zemmour in northern Mauritania, more than a hundred kilometers from an area named Guelb Ndour.
Gold mining in this country was previously reserved for a large industrial company.
But since 2016 individual mining is allowed using metal detectors.

I offer them as I found them; I have only cleaned them with soapy water.

The gold from this region is fairly pure; in general its purity is around 950 to 980 thousandths, which corresponds to 22.80 to 23.50 carats

Although gold exploitation has become one of Mauritania's primary resources, nuggets are fairly rare because almost all gold is melted into ingots which are then sent to Dubai
