Icon - Christ Pantocrator - Wood

Antique Russian icon "Christ Pantocrator" with two border saints from the 19th century (circa 1880). Hand-painted with egg tempera colors on a wooden panel with a chalk ground.

The border saints are the guardian angel and St. Nikita.

Typical method of icon painting in 18th and 19th century Tsarist Russia. The motif is widespread and very popular in the Orthodox Church.

This is an Old Believer icon. The painting is quite masterful and detailed. Perfectly harmonized color contrasts and successful shading. The painting contains very authentic craquelure (see photos).

Minimal partial restorations are present (see photos).

Particularly expressive and striking is the face of the Saint (see photos). The Saint is inscribed. The inscriptions are clearly legible.

On the back there are cross braces. Stable and solid wooden panel. The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of use (see photos).
