Description from the seller
Circa AD 198–220. A red carnelian intaglio engraved with a male bust facing left, probably representing the Emperor Caracalla. His hair is depicted in short, thick locks brushed back, with a trimmed beard and sideburns. His facial features are sharply defined: prominent brow, straight nose, large sunken eyes with a marked eyelid, and lips tightly closed over a square chin. Set in an oval bezel, the intaglio is mounted in a gold ring with a D-shaped hoop that broadens at the shoulders and tapers gradually toward the back. For a similar example, see: Bagot J., Hephaestus’ Legacy: A Monument to a Private Collection of Ancient Rings and Glyptics, no. 337. Size: D: 14.07 mm / US: 27/8 / UK: F; Weight: 5.38 g
Provenance: Private London collection; formerly part of a private South German collection, acquired in the 1980s–early 1990s. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register. Reviewed by Sami Fortune, specialist in ancient jewellery.
XRF analysis confirms high-purity gold (94.39% Au), consistent with Roman imperial jewellery.
