Description from the seller
Old wooden mirror.
Measures: 91x55 cm
No damage nor restorations,
The mirror presents characteristics typical of European classical furniture, particularly resembling the D. José Style (the Portuguese version of Rococo) or the Louis XV style. These styles are known for their elegance and detailed ornamentation.
Summary and Main Features
Style: Predominantly Rococo or Rococo Revival, characterized by the use of asymmetric shapes and flowing curves.
Material: The frame appears to be made of solid carved wood, possibly walnut, pau-santo, or mahogany, with a dark finish and a waxed coating that highlights the wood texture.
Decorative Elements:
Crest (Top): Features a prominent cut-out boss with vegetal and shell motifs.
Frame: Decorated with scrolls (spiral curls) and carved elements that extend along the sides and the base.
Shape: The frame has a tall rectangular format, but with cut and sinuous contours that soften the straight lines.
Pieces with this design were very popular in Portugal and Brazil between the 18th and 19th centuries, often used over sideboards or dressers in living rooms and bedrooms. Today, they are standout pieces in decors that blend the old with the modern.
