Description from the seller

Kanaga

Masque Dogon Kanaga (

Masque Kanaga Dogon. This mask is one of the most important among the Dogons. As a prelud e to funerals or during mourning processions, numerous nearly identical specimens appear on the dance area, after having circulated through the village alleys. It represents a bird, a four-armed human, but this is more the representation of the double creator god, turned toward heaven and earth. The bearers of this mask tilt it toward the ground and then abruptly straighten up in order to establish a link between earth and sky. In funeral rites, members of the Awa society dance with the masks on the roof of the deceased’s house, to guide his soul (nyama) to its eternal rest, and at the same time, to defend the living from the harm he might cause them. On the other hand, the Kanaga mask is also used to protect hunters from vengeance.
