Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Vieil arabe, 1900, silver gelatin print on gelatin bromide by Albert Jouve, stamped signature, 20 × 26 cm, in superb condition.
Description from the seller
Circa 1900, 20x26 cm.
"Vieil arabe", a very beautiful portrait by Albert Jouve (late 19th/early 20th century).
Superb gelatin-silver print on baryta paper, toned with gold chloride, in very good condition (fold at the top right corner), loose (not mounted, rare), and with excellent preservation of contrasts, grayscale nuances and detail levels.
Signed with a damp stamp on the back.
Albert Jouve is among those photographers active in North Africa at the turn of the 19th/20th centuries, whose work accompanied the development of tourism and colonial exchanges. Based in Algeria, he produced city views, Saharan landscapes and portraits of local “types” intended for a European clientele. Between documentary gaze and atmosphere-seeking, Jouve captures a Maghreb that is both everyday and staged, in a sober photograph, attentive to contrasts and lines.
Worth framing.
Small conservatoire-quality piece, not to be missed.
Will be shipped with its cover and its carton backing on neutral pH (ideal for a collection in good condition).
