Description from the seller
Table lamp / Girandole, bronze and rock crystal, Louis XV style, early 20th century – France
Materials: Bronze and rock crystal
Style: Louis XV
Period: Early 20th century
Country of origin: France
Good condition in keeping with its age and use
Dimensions: 58 x 36 x 36 cm.
Excellent French girandole or table lamp, from the early 20th century, in gilded bronze and rock crystal pendants.
The word “girandole” comes from the French girandole, which originally described a radial arrangement of lights (such as fireworks or candelabras with multiple flames). In general, they were candelabra with several arms for candles that opened in a radial or symmetric shape. They were often mounted on mirrors, which helped reflect the light of the candles and increase illumination in the space. It was very common to find them decorating interiors of palaces, salons or theatres. Over time they evolved, maintaining their original style, giving rise to lamps with electricity, replacing candles with bulbs.
The Louis XV Style is an artistic style, especially present in the decorative arts, that developed during the reign of Louis XV (1715-1774). Initially the designation “Louis XV Style” referred to a characteristic type of chairs, but soon extended to all the arts of the period. It is identified with the architectural style known as Rococo. Like Rococo, it features lavish decoration and detail, in contrast to the later “Louis XVI Style,” which tends to be simpler.
