Description from the seller
Hand-carved wooden frame with guazzo water gilding.
Shell motifs (Rocaille): The curved, overlapping carvings you see are typical of Rococo (or Italian Baroque). This organic design, reminiscent of a shell or a wave, was very popular in the 18th century and had various “revivals” in the 19th century.
Raised-work carving: The depth of the relief suggests good craftsmanship. The visible wood grain beneath the gilding indicates that this is solid carved wood, not pressed plaster (which would be smoother and more uniform).
Finish "Bolo": In areas where the gold is slightly worn, a reddish-brown tone can be seen. This is Armenian bole, an clay applied as a base for gold leaf gilding. Its presence is often a sign of traditional artisanal gilding.
State of Preservation
Patina: The frame shows signs of authentic aging, with small scratches and wear on the reliefs that give it character.
Gilding: There seems to be a combination of gold leaf and perhaps a subsequent pass with gold varnish or porporina in some spots to cover the signs of time, but the base appears original and valuable.
Possible Era
From the shapes and technique, it could be a mid-to-late 19th-century frame, echoing 18th-century motifs.
Dimensions: 63 x 53 cm
