Specimen: antique cast iron cork press from Germany, dating to the late 19th–early 20th century, used by pharmacists, bottlers and laboratories to temporarily press natural corks before bottling, with an intact moving mechanism despite a missing metal piece at the hinge.
Description from the seller
Antique cast-iron cork press, used by apothecaries, bottlers and laboratories to temporarily compress natural corks before they were placed into bottles.
The cork is placed in the ribbed pressing opening. By squeezing the two handles together the cork is compressed, making it easier to insert into the neck of a bottle.
This type of hand tool was used before mechanical corking devices became widely available. The press is made of solid cast iron and has a functional lever mechanism with a ribbed pressing beak. At the hinge point a piece of metal is missing. This is clearly visible in the photos. Despite this missing piece, the mechanism can still move.
An interesting piece of historical equipment from pharmacy or bottling practice.

Cast iron
Period
19th century – early 20th century
Condition

Mechanism moves.
At the hinge point a piece of metal is missing (see photos).
