Description from the seller
Circa 1880, 18x24 cm.
"Bedouin", a very beautiful portrait by Jean Garrigues (XIX).
Very beautiful albumen print in very good condition (slight creases), loose (not mounted, rare), and a very nice preservation of contrasts, grey tones and levels of detail.
Signed by a wet stamp on the back.
Will be shipped with its sleeve and its neutral pH cardboard mount (ideal for a collection in good conditions).
Jean Garrigues was active in Tunisia at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, in a context of photographic growth linked to the protectorate and the development of tourism. Photographer and publisher, he produced urban views, scenes of daily life and portraits distributed as prints and postcards.
His work is characterized by a clear light and a clean composition, attentive to architecture, markets and local figures, through a production that is both documentary and commercial.
Deserves framing.
Small PR conservatoire, not to be missed.
