Antique lorgnette from ca. 1850–1900, in gilded metal with tortoiseshell imitation and gold detailing, made in France, with its original box, in good used condition.
Description from the seller
** I was required to fill in a brand, I chose Cartier, but this lorgnet is unnoticed**
Antique Faux Tortoiseshell Lorgnet with Gold Details in it's original Box
Antieke lorgnet bril van Celluloid met schildpad immitatie in zijn originele doos.
Around 1850-1900 period.
This type of lorgnet glasses with tortoise imitation pattern were in the past especially beloved by ladies of standing and nobility because of their very high decorative value. They were also proudly seen by ladies at public events or at the opera.
This kind of glasses made of celluloid are also quite delicate. It is fairly difficult to find a beautiful and complete pristine specimen whose mechanism also works well. The mechanism works perfectly as it should. Both lenses have a slight magnification. The glasses (frame) are finished with possibly 9-karat gold decoration or is it gilded? The plaque bears the initials J.S.S of E. The frame is therefore gold-colored.
It sits in a handsome original green box with gold decorations whose locking mechanism also works perfectly.
Furthermore there is a black cord with gold-colored fittings.
This lorgnet has a beautiful original tortoise drawing.
On a scale from 1 to 10 I rate this item an 8
The inside contains a label from the firm Joh.M Schmidt opticien Haarlem. It was located at Zijlstraat 85 in Haarlem.
# Schmidt Optiek, Since 1866 - royal warrant holder
The Schmidt shop, located at the corner of Rokin 72 and de Wijde Kapelsteeg in Amsterdam, is the oldest optics store in our country. Here not only glasses are sold, but historically also barometers, hygrometers, telescopes and magnifiers for various purposes. Since its founding in 1866 the business has been led by Johann Michaël Schmidt and his descendants.
A fine addition for the collector of glasses or as a decorative item in a handsome country house
