Nephrite is a solid-solution mineral within the tremolite-actinolite series and is not recognized as a separate mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA).
When nephrite occurs as a mass of interwoven microcrystalline fibers, it is called jade. This material, also called nephrite jade, is processed into desirable gemstones and decorative objects, but chemically it differs markedly from jade that is mainly composed of jadeite. The colors of nephrite are caused by chromium and iron and range from gray-green through dark green to almost black, though the color can also shift to reddish-brown.
The name nephrite comes from the Greek nephros and means kidney. An old folk belief attributes healing and strengthening properties to the stone, especially for the kidneys, urinary tract, and bladder. Esoteric practitioners also credit it with healing properties for vision, creativity, and more, and as a protective stone, though these claims are not scientifically proven.
Stone axes made from nephrite were prized in Neolithic Europe and, because of their rarity, valuable tools.
