Description from the seller

Russian icon of Saint Nicholas with silver oklad and gilding, hallmarked – Moscow, 1883

Small portable icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, blessing with his right hand and holding an open Gospel in his left. The painting is executed in tempera on wood, protected by an oklad (revetment) in repoussé silver and chased, with a pierced golden halo.

In the upper corners are the figures of Christ blessing and the Mother of God, holding the Gospel and the omophorion, in accordance with traditional iconography.

The silver covering bears several clear hallmarks along the lower edge:
• “84”: Russian fineness guaranteeing silver at 875/1000, in use in the Russian Empire.
• City mark: Moscow (Saint George slaying the dragon, visible).
• Date letter: 1883.
• Assay/master-engraver mark: “А.С.” (A.S.), probably identified with a Moscow goldsmith active in the late 19th century.
• Assay mark of the controller: applied by the assay workshop, confirming authenticity and silver content.

Finely worked, with a decorative engraving of geometric and floral motifs. The gilded nimbus with openwork highlights the figure of Saint Nicholas, giving a beautiful luminous presence.
• Origin: Russia, Moscow.
• Date: dated 1883.
• Technique: tempera on wood, oklad in silver (875/1000) partially gilded.
• Dimensions: approximately [to be measured, probably 15 × 12 cm].

Condition: wear and small paint alterations visible on the flesh tones, patinated silver, hallmarks perfectly legible.
Photos are an integral part of the object description and complete its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any purchase.

The item will be carefully packed and shipped with tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
