Well-preserved from my collection
Baby Sumo from 2009
This Helmut Newton Little Sumo photo book concerns the first edition in this format. Little Sumo contains 394 photos and weighs 5.6 kg. The dimensions are 38 x 27 x 6 cm.
Helmut Newton's SUMO was in every respect a gigantic book: it broke records with regard to weight, dimensions, and resale price. With a weight of 35.4 kilograms, TASCHEN and Helmut Newton created a groundbreaking book that, in terms of conceptual extravagance as well as technical specifications, far surpassed anything attempted before. Published in an edition of 10,000 signed and numbered copies, SUMO was soon sold out after its release and quickly increased in value. Copies are today in numerous major collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The book was carefully revised by June Newton and remains a spectacular homage to the most influential, fascinating, and controversial photographer of the 20th century, with hundreds of exquisite images, from his breathtaking fashion photographs to his shimmering nude studies, provocative staging, and portraits of celebrities.
