Surroundings” is a visual chronicle of the most important events in the city’s life in the first half of the 20th century, supplemented with portraits of contemporaries, ethnographic images and artistic landscapes of the Vilnius surroundings.
Jan Bułhak (1876–1950), the most famous photographer of Vilnius images in the first half of the 20th century, spent almost his entire adult life in this city. Settled here before the First World War, he worked as a city photographer, was a witness and participant in its life – the camera captured historical and cultural events, photographed historical figures and ordinary Vilnius residents, church and ethnographic holidays, and documented architectural monuments.
