Antique French Comtoise clock dating to 1850–1900, in brass and metal with a mechanical movement, heavy iron weights and a half-hour bell strike, signed by François Désire Odobez of Morez and in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
This is an antique French Comtoise clock, recognizable by its distinctive casting and the signed dial by François Désire Odobez from Morez.
Features of this clock
Maker: Signed by François Désire Odobez, a well-known name from Morez, the center of Comtoise clockmaking in the French Jura.
Ornament: The clock is topped with a brass casting depicting an eagle. Although many of these clocks have a rooster ("Haancomtoise"), an eagle ornament is a specific and often sought-after type.
Dial: A white enamelled convex dial with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the five-minute indications.
Pendulum: The clock has a so-called folding or pulley pendulum (folding pendulum) and is fitted with heavy cast-iron weights to drive the movement and striking mechanism.
Historical Context
Comtoise clocks like this were produced from the 18th to the early 20th century. This specific model, with the eagle and Odobez’s signature, fits into the tradition of the French "wag-on-wall" clocks, known for their robustness and loud striking on a bell.
