Description from the seller
Subject and Iconography:
Refined late-Imperial-era Russian icon depicting Archangel Michael in a majestic pose, wearing the traditional red robe and holding a scroll with lettering. At the top left appears the figure of Christ Pantocrator blessing among the clouds. Along the lateral borders (bordures) are finely miniature four Chosen Saints (selected by the patron for the protection of the house), among which monastic figures and martyrs stand out.
Technical Details and Style:
The work is attributed to the famous Moscow School of the late 19th century (circa 1890-1910). It is distinguished by a painting execution of high precision, typical of the artisan workshops that supplied the upper bourgeoisie and the nobility of the era.
Technique: Egg tempera on a gold/silver leaf ground, mechanically hammered.
Support: Solid wooden panel with double reinforcing crossbars (sponki) interlocked on the back, securing the wood’s structural stability over time.
Decorations: The halos and borders feature ornamental motifs that imitate the preciousness of polychrome enamels and metal punchings.
Certification and Provenance:
The icon is accompanied by an original extrajudicial appraisal from 1991, drafted and signed by Dr. Antonino De Bono, a renowned art critic and expert for the Milan Court. The document authenticates the period, the school of origin, and the state of conservation.
Condition:
The work presents in excellent overall condition, with a beautiful antique patina. Subtle and physiological signs of aging on the panel attest to its authenticity and era (19th century). No invasive restorations are visible.
Dimensions:
Height: 42 cm
Width: 36 cm
