Description from the seller

Antique Sicilian Carretto Panel (c. 1860–1880) – Scenes from “Orlando Furioso”

hand-painted double panel from a traditional Sicilian cart (Carretto Siciliano), dating to the second half of the 19th century (circa 1860–1880).

This remarkable piece features two narrative scenes executed in the vibrant and theatrical style characteristic of Sicilian cart painting (pittura dei carretti). The compositions are rich in detail, with expressive figures and a strong storytelling quality typical of this regional folk art tradition.

The right panel can be stylistically associated with the Carolingian epic cycle and most likely depicts a scene inspired by Orlando Furioso, a common source of imagery on Sicilian carts. It shows a heroic mounted knight in a triumphant pose, surrounded by onlookers and architectural elements.

The left panel presents a dramatic interior scene with multiple figures, likely also drawn from an epic or historical narrative.

The panels are framed by a finely carved wooden structure and retain their original construction elements, including central metal fittings. The surface shows a beautiful and authentic patina, with age-related wear consistent with its historical use.
