Description from the seller
Glazed ceramic elephant sculpture, typical of the Kashan style (Persia).
This type of ceramic is often associated with the Seljuk period (12th–13th centuries).
It is coated with a characteristic blue-t turquoise glaze. The silvery look in places is due to iridescence, a natural degradation phenomenon of the glaze over time.
The animal bears on its back a howdah with openwork decoration. Also noteworthy are circular shields fixed to the sides of its head, a common feature on these models. The elephant is guided by a mahout, and a figure sits in the howdah.
These objects were often used as decorative pieces or sometimes as vessels (aquamaniles) in medieval Islamic art.
14 cm high x 13 cm wide x 5.5 cm deep.
Good condition, pretty iridescent glaze.
Private Belgian collection.
Postal shipment via BPOST with tracking number.
Private collection.
Tracked shipping by BPost, no shipments outside Europe.
