Description from the seller
Title:
Polychrome wooden sculptural group – Baptism of Christ – Italy, late 18th / early 19th century
Description:
Interesting devotional sculptural group in carved and polychromed wood depicting the Baptism of Christ, with Saint John the Baptist pouring water over Jesus' head.
The composition, articulated across multiple figures, presents an effective narrative rendering and a good balance between movement and stillness: Christ upright, with soft and natural drapery, and Saint John the Baptist kneeling in a devout attitude. Also present is the lamb, a symbol of Christology.
The workmanship is attributable to an Italian production of a popular milieu from the late 18th and early 19th century, with characteristics still tied to Baroque taste in gesturality and drapery, but already simplified according to a later sensibility.
Widespread traces of the original polychromy are still visible, with subdued and natural chromatics that contribute to the charm of the work.
Condition:
Overall, the conditions are discrete, with evident signs of time:
- wear and loss of polychromy
- widespread abrasions
- small losses and imperfections
- possible overpaintings at the base
- normal signs of age and use
Overall, the work maintains good structural integrity and a notable decorative impact.
Era: late 18th – early 19th century
Origin: Italy
Material: carved and polychromed wood
Dimensions: [to be inserted]
Notes:
Sacred art group of particular interest for collectors and enthusiasts, ideal for antique settings or decorative installations.
