Frosted glass bowl with C-shaped handles by J. Pohl, in the Art Nouveau style dating to 1910–1920, made in France, dimensions about 22 cm wide by 16 cm deep and 10 cm high, weighing 547 g, in good used condition with minor wear.
Description from the seller
This object is a frosted glass bowl or coupe (often called acid- or etched glass), typical of late 19th-century or early 20th-century glass production, most likely in the Art Nouveau style.
The signature "J. Pohl" is clearly visible in the second photo. He was a glass decorator whose work is often associated with the French school or Central European (Bohemian) traditions. Although less famous than Gallé or Daum, his pieces are sought after for the finesse of their enameled decorations.
The decoration features enameled thistles. It is an emblematic motif of the Art Nouveau period, particularly dear to the Nancy School (where it symbolized Lorraine's resistance to German annexation with the motto: "Qui s'y frotte, s'y pique").
The decoration is applied in relief enamel on frosted glass. The white points used to simulate the texture of the thistle are very evident.
The tones of blue, pale green and lavender on this frosted background are very characteristic of this period.
With its small handles (ears), it could be a bouillon bowl, a finger rinse, or simply a decorative coupe.
Maximum height 10 cm with a maximum width of 22 cm at the level of the handles.
Overall good condition; see photos, they are an integral part of the description.
