Description from the seller
Material & Craftsmanship
Marble Top: The piece is crowned with a thick, contoured white marble slab featuring subtle grey veining, typical of the Carrara or Breccia varieties used to provide a durable and luxurious surface.
Marquetry Inlay: The front and sides are decorated with intricate floral marquetry. This involves using contrasting wood veneers—likely rosewood, kingwood, or mahogany—to create delicate patterns of blooming flowers and foliage within decorative "reserves" or panels.
Ormolu Mounts: It features ornate gilt-bronze (ormolu) hardware. These include the scrolling "rocaille" drawer pulls, the "chutes" protecting the corners, and the decorative "sabots" (shoes) on the feet. The central apron also boasts a prominent bronze "frieze" for added symmetry.
Design Characteristics
Bombé Shape: The commode features a "bombé" or swelling front and sides, a hallmark of the Rococo movement that favors curves and organic movement over rigid, straight lines.
Cabriole Legs: The tall, slender legs curve gracefully outward and then inward, ending in bronze-capped feet, which gives the heavy chest a sense of lightness and height.
Two-Drawer Layout: As a sauteuse, it utilizes two wide drawers that blend into the overall decorative scheme of the facade, often making the horizontal separation between drawers almost invisible.
