Description from the seller

Pair of carved wooden seats – Italy, 18th-19th century

Provenance: Italy (central-northern area)
Material: solid carved wood (probably walnut)
Technique: hand-carved in the round
Number of pieces: pair

Description

Refined pair of representative seats in solid wood finely carved, attributable to Italian production of the 18th century, with a fully Baroque taste.

The tall contoured backrests feature rich decoration of scrolls, foliage, and palmettes, culminating at the top with a carved grotesque mask of strong expressive character, a typical element of ceremonial and noble furnishings of the period.

The horizontal band beneath is adorned with rosette motifs and grooves, while the lower, massive and carved structures give the seats an imposing stage presence. The solid, padded-free seat confirms the representational use rather than everyday use.

The carving is deep, continuous and structural, not applied, with slight asymmetries that testify to the artisanal craftsmanship. The original dark patina, achieved from natural aging of the wood and from ancient waxes, gives great warmth and authenticity to the whole.

Condition

In good preserved condition, with normal signs of time and use consistent with age. Structurally solid. Small modern restorations noted.

Furnishings with strong decorative impact, ideal for:

• reception rooms

• impressive entrances

• historic interiors or antique collections

• high-level scenographic installations

Sold as a pair.
