A pair of Art Nouveau bronze candlesticks with a stork – approx. 1900

An exceptionally decorative pair of bronze candlesticks from the Art Nouveau period (circa 1890–1910), featuring an elegant stork rising from a natural base of leaves and branches. These candlesticks combine sculptural finesse with the organic forms so characteristic of the Art Nouveau style.

The candlesticks are richly designed: from a naturistically modeled foot of leaves and roots a slender stem grows upward, against which a graceful stork is depicted. At the top the stem ends in a flower-shaped candle holder, as if the candle springs from an open bloom. This type of design – where flora and fauna meet – was a favored theme within Art Nouveau.

The stork carried a symbolic meaning in decorative arts around 1900. The bird was often associated with happiness, homeliness, and new life, and was therefore regularly used in interior decoration and artisanal crafts of this period.

Art Nouveau designers drew strong inspiration from nature. Rather than strict symmetry, they favored flowing lines, plant motifs, and animal figures, cast in materials such as bronze, brass, or spelter. These candlesticks fit perfectly into that tradition: the object is not only functional, but also a small sculptural artwork.

The warm gold-toned patina of the bronze gives the candlesticks a rich, classic appearance and highlights the exquisite details of the casting.

A special and characterful pair that works wonderfully as both lighting and sculptural decorative objects in a classical, eclectic, or Art Nouveau interior.
