Masque Muminia, a Lega mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, dating to the mid-20th century, from a private collection, measuring 26 cm high by 1 cm wide and 1 cm deep, authentic original.
Description from the seller
The masks used in the Bwami initiatory society of the Lega, established in the Democratic Republic of Congo, stand out for their simplicity and symbolic depth. Unlike other African traditions, these objects, often carved from ivory or wood, do not cover the face but are worn as insignia or held in the hand. Their minimalist form, sometimes abstract, reflects moral values and stages of wisdom acquired within Bwami, an institution that structures social and spiritual life.
These masks, reserved for initiates, embody proverbs or ethical principles, serving as pedagogical aids during ceremonies. Their use underscores the importance of knowledge, justice, and community harmony. Thus, Lega art, stripped of superfluous ornamentation, reveals a constant quest for meaning and balance, rooted in an oral and initiatory tradition.
